Philo T. Farnsworth W9F Special Event Station August 17, 2019 1400 to 2200 UTC

Commemorating Philo Farnsworth Birthday, Father of Television

Special event station operating 40m & 20m SSB from 1400 to 2200 UTC on Saturday August 17

Philo T. Farnsworth, the father of electronic television, worked in Fort Wayne Indiana from 1951 to 1967 for ITT (currently L3Harris Technologies Corporation).  The company name has changed many times. The physical plant once located on Pontiac street is, where Farnsworth performed his research, it is now just a bare field.

Current and former L3Harris employees will operate a special event station from 1400 to 2200 UTC on Saturday August 17 to commemorate Farnsworth’s birthday (August 19, 1906) and his many achievements.  The special event call sign W9F (whiskey-nine-farnsworth) will operate on 20m and 40m SSB in the current L3Harris Technical and Administrative Center which houses the Philo T. Farnsworth museum.  The museum contains many examples of Farnsworth’s televisions, radios, and equipment from his research lab affectionately dubbed ‘the cave’.  Public visitors are welcome to explore the museum and witness the special event station in action during operating hours.

QSO’s with W9F can be confirmed by sending a QSL card and SASE to;
