Boy Scout Camporee at Nobile County Fairgrounds

The Northeastern Indiana Amateur Radio Association (NIARA) introduced Amateur Radio to the public, at the Noble County Fairgounds on October 14th.

The Boy Scouts of America from several counties from North East Indiana had gathered for a Scout Camporee. Many scouts and parents toured the educational trailer offered by NIARA. They were taught the basics of Amateur Radio by Jeff, KB9QG, with the assistance of Dave, KC9YY, Ken, KD9HMS, Jeffrey AD9CP.

The NIARA set up two HF antennas and one VHF/UHF antenna for demonstration purposes.  Dave, KC9YY, made HF contacts throughout the day to show the groups how HF worked, and the wonders of communications through Amateur Radio. The NIARA educational trailer was a perfect facility to use because it rained throughout the day and guests stayed dry and warm during the learning sessions.

Approximately one hundred scouts and parents visited the NIARA educational trailer during the day.

The NIARA educational trailer is also available to be used during natural disasters for communications.

2023 10-4 FIRST ANNUAL INDIANA COMU FIELD DAY in Plymouth, Indiana

On October 4th, Jeff (KB9QG) and John (KD9QDL) had an eventful day at the first 2023 10-4 FIRST ANNUAL INDIANA COMU FIELD DAY in Plymouth, Indiana. The primary purpose of this event was to test their communication skills, particularly in the areas of frequency, data, and digital voice communication. This kind of exercise is valuable for emergency response teams and organizations as it helps them prepare for various scenarios and challenges.

The use of “injects” every 15 to 20 minutes the event organizers simulated different tasks that participants had to respond to. These injects could have included scenarios like setting up communication equipment, relaying important information, coordinating responses, or troubleshooting communication issues. It’s a common practice in emergency response training to have these kinds of simulated exercises to assess readiness and improve skills.

After completing the tasks and responding to the injects, the participants evaluated the operation. This post-event evaluation is crucial as it allows participants to reflect on what went well and what could be improved in their communication and response efforts. It also helps organizers gather feedback to enhance future training exercises and emergency response plans.

Overall, Jeff and John had a productive day testing and honing their communication skills for emergency response in Plymouth, Indiana. Such training and field exercises play a vital role in ensuring the preparedness of emergency response teams for real-life situations.
